Will if Fly? is a book for budding entrepreneurs who wish to learn how to identify a good business idea. It just came out two weeks ago, and has already received rave reviews. Author Pat Flynn is well known in internet marketing circles, and he’s been featured in Forbes as well a The New York Times so let’s see what his recent book is all about.
But first, a little background on Mr. Flynn and his Smart Passive Income empire.
The Author & His Company
Pat Flynn is in the incredibly enviable position of having one of the largest and most loyal followings in his industry. He cultivated this following partly through the success of his podcasts, which teach entrepreneurs the ropes of making money online.
But it’s not just his sage advice to his fans that make him such a beloved fixture in the passive income universe. He’s got extra charm and that carries over into his podcasts- people say they feel they know him when they listen to the podcasts or see him at conferences.
His podcasts are perhaps even more well known than his website (Smart Passive Income), so discovery of his brand is actually taking place through iTunes and YouTube rather than primarily through search engines.
Mr. Flynn has moved from affiliate marketer to producing his own products (2013) to his new book this year.
Will It Fly – The Book
Will if Fly? is exactly what it sounds like: it teaches readers how to know if the idea(s) they’re working on will pay off. Flynn uses his eight years of experience and engagement with fledgling entrepreneurs to dole out sage advice on starting out with the right business idea.
His most-oft asked question in those 8 years has been how to tell if an idea will fly or flop. Motivated by the desire to prevent the wasted of countless hours spent pursuing bad ideas by his followers, Flynn wrote this book to help everyone out.
The book teaches readers how to evaluate their ideas objectively, as well as if they’ll fly with them personally (in other words is the business idea a good match for the reader?).
The five main parts to the book are as follows:
- Mission Design. Does your idea align with your goals?
- Development Lab. How to thoroughly investigate your idea.
- Flight Planning. How to evaluate the current market for your idea.
- Flight Simulator. Actually test your idea on a small section of the target market.
- All Systems Go. This is a final analysis- are you sure this is what you want?
As you can see, Mr. Flynn has branded the book and the themes with cute airline-coded metaphors and symbols. That makes it a pleasure to read, a fact that’s backed up by the (as of now) 152 glowing reviews he’s received on the Amazon page for the book.
In fact, the book is a “Best of the Month” award winner on Amazon, which is a type of editors’ picks list published each month.
There is a paperback version and a Kindle version of the Will it Fly? book. Paperback costs around 15 bucks and Kindle version is about $4. An audio version is underway.
In a way, Pat Flynn’s development as an author is really bringing him back to his roots, perhaps what he does best. After all, he started his entire online career by writing about the trials and tribulations of preparing for a notoriously difficult architect’s exam. That was back before he started SPI, when he was working as an actual architect before the Great Recession.
Eight years later and he’s taken a recession-induced layoff and turned into a multi-million dollar empire. His first book was a ebook study guide on passing the LEED exam for architects, and 8 years later he’s still passing on wisdom through books.
The Amazon reviews speak for themselves: this book is a must -read for anyone who wants to start an online business.
